The first nine weeks of school have flown by. I am a very proud Papa as I look at all our children have accomplished, they have worked really hard this quarter and it shows. School in the past has been very difficult for some of our children. I was a certified teacher at one stage in my life so I know a little about how children learn but I’m no expert. I know there are different theories about cognition and there are volumes of research about creating environments that promote learning, classroom discipline, even what colors the walls should be in order to adequately stimulate the mind of the learner. Like I said, I’m no expert, but I do know this about children doing well in school: they do not do well when they are hungry, when they are afraid, when they are tired, when they are worried about where they will sleep tonight, or wondering where Mama has been for the past few days and they certainly do not do well if it seems that no one cares about them.
All of us realize that coming to Crosswell does not automatically fix everything that ails our children. The broken hearts suffered by many of our children will take years to heal and many will still carry the scars of their childhood forever. But coming to live at Crosswell does start the healing process. A child whose needs are met in a safe environment while being surrounded by people that really care about her becomes hopeful not only about her immediate situation but also the future. Hopeful children are happy, hopeful children grow and heal, and hopeful children can do really well in school. I can find all the research that supports these statements if you would really like to see it, or I can just show you the report cards, the Honor Roll certificates and the smiling faces.
